When launching the game for the first time, you have the option to play the free shareware version of the game. To get access to the full game, files from original Quake II need to be located during initial installation process. I run the steam version of quake2 on a win7-64bit just fine. Although I can't remember if I had to fiddle with it or not. That said Quake2 / Quake3 regularly break when Nvidia / (Ati?) updates their drivers specifically when they update OpenGL. I got quake II for free when i purchased Quake 4, and i decided to play it to see what it was like. But whenever i hit water, my game crashes to desktop. In the ' Target ' line, after the quotation marks ( ' ) append the end with ' -windowed ' e.g.
